The road to becoming a real estate developer

Individuals who have the desire to develop a real estate property from start to finish have a place in the world of real estate development. However, this desire would not be enough to make it far in the industry. The road to becoming a real estate developer is a challenging one and requires a skillset different from other industries.

Real estate developers double as entrepreneurs, says Gene Bernshtam. These individuals are the ones in charge of planning and controlling projects from beginning to end, from buying a land to developing the property. A number of daily responsibilities must be met by a real estate developer, which include visiting and examining land areas and developments, meeting with investors and contractors, researching new projects, balancing the books, confirming properties are following codes, communicating with local offices, and troubleshooting.

While conventional education is rarely a requirement, to become a certified real estate developer, one must gain experience in the real estate industry. Individuals with knowledge and experience in the real estate industry can begin to focus on building knowledge on real estate investment once they decide to become a developer.

According to Gene Bernshtam, certification is voluntary. A few of the requirements needed to become a certified real estate developer include an institute membership for six months at the least; a minimum of three years of real estate experience in fields such as real estate brokerage, sales, and development; and an active real estate license. Real estate professionals can continue their education even after becoming a certified developer.
